Ask Mr. Boating Guy
Mr. Boating Guy,
My kids saw a television special on Manatees and since we're planning a family trip to Florida, we'd like to see them up close. Are there any good spots to view the manatees?

I once took the advice of a local Ft. Myers fisherman and went down to the power plant to watch the manatees frolic in the outflow. I saw some anhingas, more fishermen, and a lot of mangrove, but not a single manatee.
It wasn't until I stopped for a few days in Homosassa Springs, that I really got to see manatees up close. The Florida State Park there has a wildlife refuge that is worth the trip. It was the location of a National Geographic TV special on manatees, maybe the one your kids saw. You can take a peek at the refuge through their underwater web cam.

Florida's Sun Coast

C358WS $29.95
There's a lot of good information on the Save the Manatee Club website. Manatees are remarkable creatures and Florida's Gulf Coast is a great place to see them.
