Mr. Boating Guy,
I'd like to try out big game fishing this summer, any suggestions?
Amberjacks
can be the most thrilling and exhausting big game fish you'll
ever battle.
Amberjacks (AJ's) are gigantic jacks that can grow to be five
feet long and weigh up to 160 pounds. The Amberjack got its name from the
amber colored stripe that runs along the middle of their body, from the eye
until just in front of their v-shaped tail fin. They like to hang out in
deep water around structures like shipwrecks, rocky reefs, and oilrigs in
the Gulf.
You’ll need 80-pound line on the reel to catch a big one. If you think
you've caught a record-breaking Amberjack contact the
International Game Fish Association.
Their website has an application and details the
requirements necessary for you to register your world record catch.
I'd recommend getting in shape this spring, so you'll be up for the
challenge this summer. You'll need strong arms and a strong back to land an
Amberjack.
