Ask Mr. Boating Guy
Mr. Boating Guy,
I just received a GPS unit as an early Christmas present. The harbor is too frozen to try it out on the water, any suggestions on how to try it out on land?

You will enjoy Geocaching. It's a new adventure game for GPS users. Participants go 'treasure hunting' for a secret cache hidden in a remote or unusual location.

Armed with a set of coordinates, a good map, and your GPS unit, the hunt for the treasure begins. It's not as easy as it sounds. It can be tricky to pinpoint the exact location, and there could be a river or a mountain between you and the geocache. The cache is usually stored in a water-proof container, inside is a stash of secret treasures and a log book to register your name. The custom is to take an item and leave a new item for the next person who finds the geocache. This is a great way to try out your new GPS receiver and challenge your navigation skills.

Outdoorsman's Guide To GPS

N3883WS $29.95
The Geocaching.com web site details the rules of the hunt and lists many caches hidden all over the world. You may type in your zipcode to locate the coordinates of the closest geocache to your home port. Happy hunting.
